Barron's is out with its rankings of the best mutual fund families based on their performance in 2012. On the bond side, Barron's split out its rankings between the taxable and tax-exempt categories. In the taxable bond segment, the top fund families were:
- Virtus Investment Partners
- Lord Abbett & Co.
- PIMCO
- Frost Investment Advisors
- Franklin Templeton
In the non-taxable category, the top families of 2012 were:
- Pioneer Investment Management
- Oppenheimer Funds
- Lord Abbett & Co.
- Hartford
- Mainstay Funds
Keep in mind, these are backward-looking rankings that can - and will - exhibit major shifts from year to year. Also, a key driver of outperformance in one year - for instance, an above-average position in corporate bonds - can be a negative in the subsequent year. As a result, this list can be used for information purposes, but it shouldn't be a guide for picking fund families that are likely to outperform in 2013 and beyond.
